Introduction to Year 6

Welcome to Year 6. Although your child may feel this is a daunting year due to National Tests and preparing for seniors, we endeavour to make it as exciting, rewarding and enjoyable as possible.

At the beginning of the academic year, pupils are encouraged to apply for positions of responsibility, such as Head Boy and Head Girl as well as other important Prefect roles.

Each year, the pupils embark on an exciting trip to London for 2 nights and 3 days - we know this is something that the class will look forward to. The London trip takes place after the end of Key Stage assessments and is a well-deserved reward for all the hard work and perseverance the pupils have put in throughout the year. Alongside our trip to London, all our Key Stage 2 children (with Year 6 taking priority of main roles) perform in Christmas and Summer shows.

We try to ensure that Year 6 children view their SATs as a positive experience; it is a reflection of their KS2 education and an opportunity for them to demonstrate their understanding in many of the curriculum.

Outside of the curriculum, children can represent themselves and their school in many different ways, such as sporting and music events throughout the year.

As a luxury of being an all-through school, we ensure a seamless transition from Primary to Secondary. Please feel reassured the constant communication between staff in the Primary and Secondary departments throughout the year, especially in the Summer term as the children's transition approaches.

Learning at Home:

Although we know your child will work tremendously hard at school, we do believe that home learning is also important. It enables you to build stronger learning relationships when supporting your child whilst encouraging a sense of independence as they complete tasks.

Each week, your child will bring home spellings that generally follow a rule or pattern. Finding strategies and techniques to help your child learn and retain these rules will help support their understanding.

Our school has access to Times Tables Rockstars (TTRS) and all children are provided with a unique username and password. We strongly encourage regular access to this website to improve children's speed recall and retention of their tables. Alongside TTRS, Year 6 pupils have access to Dr. Frost Maths where they can complete practice SATs questions and papers as their regular homework.

Regular reading with your child, even in Year 6, is proven to support their understanding of the text, enrich their vocabulary and build inference skills so therefore, we encourage your child to read at least once per night at home.

As the SATs approach, pupils are strongly encouraged to purchase revision books for their upcoming assessments. These revision materials will take place as children's weekly homework and will support their achievement overall.
