Introduction to Year 5:
Welcome to Year 5 with Mrs O'Byrne!
Throughout Year 5, the children will become more independent and take on extra responsibilities as they prepare for Year 6 and the transition to secondary school.
There are a range of exciting topics to learn about in Year 5. As historians, the children will travel back in time to Ancient Greece as well as look at the similarities and differences between Ancient Maya and Anglo-Saxon Britain. In Science, the children will become astronauts and discover the vastness of space, along with investigating how different forces work just like the famous astronomer and physicist, Galileo Galilei. For Geography, the children will learn about different biomes and make comparisons between the continents of Europe, North America and South America. They will also develop their map skills by working with OS maps.
At Chetwynde School, we are very lucky to have such a large and beautiful outdoor space. The children will get to take full advantage of the school grounds during the year, both in lessons and during extra-curricular activities. Whether we are being writers, artists, athletes or engineers, we love having opportunities to enjoy the outdoors!
Learning at Home:
Homework is set every Friday on Teams and is due in the following Wednesday. This will always involve the children reading their school reading book to an adult each night and recording this in their reading records. The children are expected to bring their reading book and reading record into school each day.
All of the children will have access to a Times Table Rock Stars account and will be encouraged to use this weekly to ensure fluency and confidence in mathematics. Additionally, the children will also be asked to complete a selection of spelling, punctuation and grammar questions on SPAG.com, which will be based on the week's learning.
