Chetwynde School

Respect, Responsibility, Resilience

Introduction to Year...

Welcome to our Reception class page. Here you will find our long term overview for learning across the Reception year.

We are very lucky to have an outdoor area, which has been designed to provide a quality learning environment for our children. It fosters independence, resilience, team work and curiosity. Children in Reception enjoy their learning, which is balanced between child-initiated activities and adult-led activities, to ensure all children make good progress and develop the key skills, knowledge and learning to lead them into Year 1 and beyond. We explore our families and ourselves, our rights and responsibilities, find out about the world, grow things, learn about endangered animals and explore the world of water, alongside anything else the children are interested in!

With fantastic adult support, the children learn and grow, with a Forest School session every week, as well as PE and Music.

We would love to see you and tours to join the Chetwynde Family are very welcome!

Class Teacher: Mrs K Stepanian

Reception Team: Mrs J Brown, Miss K Boswell, Mrs R Lomas

Learning at Home:

You can help your child at home during the Reception year.

When children bring reading books home, reading with them (even just a page or two) every night, helps them develop their reading skills. As they develop their phonic knowledge, the books will increase in word length, but they will always contain words with the sounds they know, so that they can decode them. We will also share the phonics learning for each half term, on a weekly basis so you can practise at home. Repeated practise, again helps children develop the skills for reading.

We will also share what we are learning about in class, so that you can talk with your child about their learning!

Learning at School:

Below you will find our long term map of learning for the Reception year. Our curriculum is driven by core texts that develop key focuses for learning. This supports the children to be ready for their learning in KS1 and beyond. The threads of learning for our whole school curriculum start here in the Early Years, following through from Kindergarten, with key themes introduced that are the starting points for future learning. This is the start of historians, geographers, artists, performers, sporting stars... the list goes on.

Whilst we have our themes and texts to support the provocations for learning, we also follow the children's interests and our well-resourced and independent child-led time enables all children to thrive and progress.
