Respect, Responsibility, Resilience

Welcome to Year 2

Year 2 are a class of 30 enthusiastic and creative children who love to learn. The children will tell you they work hard but equally they have lots of fun too. This year will be yet another year full of exciting learning, challenges and opportunities for the children to develop not only their knowledge but their ability to work and learn together. In the classroom the children are happy, kind and thoughtful and they make it a lovely place to be.

About our curriculum:

Our Topics

Our topics for the year aim to continue to develop curiosity and a thirst for knowledge.  We believe that children learn best when they are motivated and inspired which is what our curriculum aims to do. Please see our Long Term Plan overview to find out what we topics we will be learning about this year.

Phonics and English

Reading is always at the heart of our curriculum, we encourage the class to read as much as they can, at home and in school. Whether that be listening to stories, reading aloud or taking part in a shared reading activity, developing a love of books is incredibly important in Year 2. We base our daily English lessons on a fiction or non-fiction text. The children are always incredibly excited to discover what book we are sharing next and this helps them to produce some fantastic pieces of writing.

Maths

We follow the White Rose Maths Scheme for our daily lessons. The scheme ensures we can give the children what they need in order to become resilient math mathematicians, independent and reflective thinkers. Throughout a lesson, children have access to concrete resources to build their understanding of number. They have the opportunity to solve fluency, reasoning and problem solving questions to ensure deep understanding.
